Medical hosiery support is a relatively new development, about 10-15 years old. And now, pantyhose have to do a lot more than stay up. Never heard of medical hosiery support, check out the hosiery department at any department store and you'll quickly get the picture. There's a pantyhose to correct practically every figure flaw below the waist - different models promise to lift and tuck just about everything. Is Medical Hosiery Support Just a Marketing Trick? However, with medical hosiery support, they go even further. Some pantyhose manufacturers, like the slew of other marketers tapping into the baby boomer's obsession with staying young, are introducing styles they maintain will actually revitalize our legs by stimulating circulation and decreasing swelling. Several makers claim their new products will improve skin tone, while decreasing cellulite and leg fatigue. They use terms like 'graduated compression,' but what does that even mean? What is Graduated Compression? Traditional support pantyhose, which have been around for years, have the same compression everywhere, from the waist to the toe. Graduated compression medical hosiery support styles offer the heaviest compression in the ankle area, which lessens as you move up. This aids circulation and makes you feel a lot less fatigued. Sound vaguely familiar? Is this your grandma's support hose? Close, but no. Does Support Hosiery Actually Work? According to studies, healthy women in reasonably good condition experienced a reduction of swelling in the lower leg by wearing the medical hosiery. That, in turn, triggers some physiological mechanisms, that end up in the reduction of leg fatigue during the course of the day. The new technology appears to be hitting every level of the pantyhose market. Hanes has its Smooth Illusions Revitalizing Collection, which the company says will help prevent swelling and leg fatigue thanks to the hose's inherent massaging effect that will help maintain leg health. Victoria's Secret has its Pulse Points - graduated compression hosiery that it maintains will improve circulation and energize legs. Age Defiance by Hue is another popular brand. But, just because these products are sold by well-known brands doesn’t mean they’ll provide medical-grade support. The question is, are the supposed benefits of these graduated compression products cosmetic, too? Basically, any pair of pantyhose that you can buy at a department store is not going to do anything for a real medical condition, but at the end of the day your legs do feel less tired. It won't actually do anything for cellulite either, but could improve the way it looks. So, no, standard, store bought medical hosiery support won’t provide the full support that actual medical hosiery does. However, they will live up to their claims of supporting your legs and improving circulation. See also: All Site Articles for Clothing Apparel Tips
