Business Casual Clothing: A Woman’s Clothing Essentials for a Business Casual Dress Code

Custom Search

Business casual clothing is the standard for everyday office wear. It’s the dress code for middle America and the majority of us who spend our days in cubicles.

But, what does it mean? And if you’re new to the work force, what should you be buying to fit into the business casual mold?

For a list of business casual clothing essentials that every professional woman should have in her closet, keep reading.

One Black Cardigan

This is going to be your go-to item all year. A good cardigan provides the coverage of a blazer, but without the fuss or stuffiness. It says business casual, while still maintaining a professional look.

The best part? You can wear a basic black cardigan over a camisole, blouse, plain shirt or even a casual dress and it will instantly take it up a notch.

Look for a lightweight, ¾ sleeve cardigan for the summer months and a heavier blend for winter. Also, avoid dryclean-only fabrics or fabrics that are too casual (cotton or polyester, for example).

This is a piece of business casual clothing you’ll likely be wearing two or more times a week, so you want a piece that’s high-quality and easy to care for.

Two Pairs of Black Pants

These are your basic, flat-front black pants in a flattering cut that’s not too long and not too short. Pair these with a tucked in blouse or even crisp, fitted T-shirt and you have business casual clothing down to a science.

One Black Skirt

A seasonally-appropriate skirt at a knee-skimming length is perfect for business casual. Look for a flattering fit and pair this essential office basic with a sweater, crisp T-shirt, blouse or shirt for a great workplace look.

Five Shirts (One camisole, two blouses, two shirts and one crisp T-shirt)

Shirts are where you can have a little fun with your outfit and add in some color. For business basics, stick to black on the bottom, but enjoy yourself up top.

If you’re mixing in a lot of T-shirts, make sure they’re crisp and not faded or worn-out. Remember, it doesn’t take much to replace a $15 T-shirt.

Your button-up shirts and blouses should be wrinkle-free, so look for a fabric that’s easy to care for and won’t wrinkle easily. I like nylon or stretch blends.

Avoid shirts that are dryclean-only (unless it’s in your budget) and always iron or steam your shirts before wearing them.

Five Accessories

Probably the biggest business casual clothing failure that most people make is failing to include an accessory.

By adding a necklace, scarf, belt, bracelet or earrings to an outfit, you’ll instantly make it appear more stylish and more mature. But remember, don’t overdo it – one accessory is usually enough.
